Institutional Review Board

The Peru State College Institutional Review Board (IRB) is charged with protecting the rights and welfare of human research subjects, specifically ensuring that those individuals participating in research are not subject to undue or inappropriate risks, that participation remains a voluntary right, and that the conduct of research is upheld as a privilege.

Prior to starting research involving human subjects, faculty and/or student researchers must submit their proposals to the IRB. The IRB review must find that all criteria for IRB approval are met, or grant exemption, as applicable. The IRB evaluates whether resources are adequate to protect subjects' rights and welfare.

Remember that in Nebraska, research involving people who are 18 years old and younger would need special approval since they are considered minors.

CITI Training

Primary Investigators and IRB members must complete training with The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program). Choose the Social-Behavioral-Educational (SBE) Basic course. This course covers the core human subjects research topics for social-behavioral-educational researchers. You need to complete 13 modules and there is some flexibility in choosing which modules to complete. Each module takes approximately 20 minutes. Register as an independent learner. The VPAA will reimburse you for the charge ($129) or you can use your department purchasing card to pay for the course.
