Technology for College
If you are planning on purchasing a computer for college here are some things to consider when making this important decision.
- A computer purchased in the last 3 years will more than likely be just fine. Specifically, you will need a CPU 2.0 GHZ or greater and RAM 4 GB or greater.
- Any broadly advertised brand of computer maker will usually be acceptable as long as the student can get support and software driver support. These include Asus, Lenovo, Dell, HP, Apple, Toshiba, Samsung, and several others.
- For School of Education students specifically, that MAC/Apple devices (especially tablets) are highly recommended as they will be used in most of their Education Courses.
PC: Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or 10
Mac: iOS 10.8 or greater
Internet Explorer 11.0 or greater
Firefox: 31.0 or greater
Chrome: 36.0 or greater
Safari: 10.0 or greater (Mac version only)
Edge 20.0 or greater
Both PC and Mac users should install Firefox and/or Chrome in addition to their default browser. This ensures that all users have two Blackboard compatible browsers to provide an alternative option, should a technical issue arise.
Later versions of Internet Explorer (Windows) and Safari (Mac) are Blackboard supported, but it is our recommendation to use Firefox or Chrome for a better user experience.
Broadband Internet is recommended.
All documents, presentations, spreadsheets, etc., that are uploaded to Blackboard
need to be saved in MS Office format (.doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .xls, .xlsx extensions).
Documents for submission can be created with GoogleApps through the students campus gmail account. Google apps have the ability to store files in the Microsoft file formats.
